What brings a BMW into the shop

Cooling system

Water pumps, thermostats and expansion tanks. On the N54, N55 and many later engines the water pump is electric and tends to fail with little warning, so we check it before it strands you.

Oil leaks

Valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are the usual suspects. Caught early it is a gasket job; left alone, oil gets onto the belts and the exhaust.

Timing chain and VANOS

Timing chain guides on the N20 and N26 four-cylinders, and VANOS solenoids that cause rough idle and fault codes. A rattle on a cold start is worth having looked at.

xDrive

Transfer case service and actuator faults on the X3, X5 and other xDrive models.

Battery and electrics

A new battery has to be registered to the car so it charges it correctly. We register and code after the work rather than only swapping the part.

Servicing a BMW properly

BMWs use condition-based service: the car tracks its own oil, brake fluid and inspection due dates and shows them on the dash. We service to the BMW Longlife oil approval your engine calls for and reset the service items that were done, so the car's own records stay right.

A BMW in a Regina winter

Below minus twenty a tired battery is the first thing to go, and many BMWs carry a large AGM battery that costs more and has to be registered when it is replaced. A load test in the fall is cheap by comparison. Before winter we also check the cooling system and look for the intake and vacuum leaks that show up as a rough idle on a cold morning.

BMW questions

Do you reset the service indicator after a BMW service?

Yes. We reset the condition-based service items that were actually done, so the dash shows the right due dates.

Do you register a new battery on a BMW?

Yes. Registration is part of the job on the cars that need it, so the charging system knows the new battery's type and age.

Will servicing my BMW at an independent shop affect the warranty?

No. In Canada a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because an independent shop did the maintenance. Keep the receipts and the record of what was done — we give you both.
